Far Trekking

So..what we are actually going to do in Madagascar?

Well, hopefully raising a lot of money for WaterAid projects…and doing this by raising donations and sponsorship for us to attempt a 12 day trek through one of Madagascar’s national parks and climb Pic Boby*, the island’s second highest mountain.

This challenging trek will take us to remote Madagascar through canyons and gorges to bush-covered plains and dense forests, rocky ridges and the summit of the island’s highest accessible mountain peak.

This will be tough going and so we will be training a lot for this as the heat, altitude, rough roads and long distances will make this an arduous experience.

Once the trek is completed we will also go to visit projects that WaterAid has supported so you can see the work that your money will help.

Please, help us by donating and supporting WaterAid to spur us on to raise money for this this truly remarkable country. Help and follow us and we will post pictures of the stunning scenery and amazing wildlife whilst we are there too. Might even get some classic You Been Framed clips of us falling over on the way, with lemurs pointing and laughing in the background…got to be worth donating a tenner for that surely.

* The Boby bit in Pic Boby (or Peak Boby) is actually a dog’s name. The Frenchman who first summited the mountain in 1956 climbed it with his dog, Boby and named the mountain in the dog’s honour….the local’s apparently don’t like that a sacred mountain has been named after a dog.

Hang on, there’s lemur

Aside from bad puns there will be a lot of stuff going on to help us reach our fundraising target from music concerts to outdoor cinemas, cake and samosa sales.

More to come and any ideas on how we can raise funds would be great….maybe some lemurchandise?

Trek Madagascar for WaterAid

In November this year we head off to Madagascar to raise money for WaterAid.

If all you know about Madagascar is that the animals like to move it, move it then there is a lot more to learn. Madagascar is an island on the east coast of Africa (it’s the big blob on the bottom right in the Indian Ocean). It is the 4th largest island in the world and filled with the most amazing plants and animals. In fact of the 250,000 species that live on the island, 70% don’t exist anywhere else on the planet. It is a country rich with bio diversity yet, it is the world’s 10th poorest country.

11.7 million people do not have access to clean water in Madagascar and over 21 million people have no safe place to go to the toilet. Over 2,100 children die every year from diarrhoea caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation.

Nik visited Mozambique last year (which is just a short skip and a jump across the Madagascar channel) to see first hand the impact and change that WaterAid can do. This year we are both heading out to try and raise money to support similar projects in Madagascar.

This blog will let you know more about how money we raise will help WaterAid and fun facts about this amazing country (300 species of frogs but no toads! Razor sharp stone forests, Extinct 10 foot tall elephant birds!).

We will also keep you informed of any fundraising activity that we are doing as we would love for you to get involved and help us. We have a target of £8,000 to raise for WaterAid and are currently at 25% with £2,034.60 so a lot of work stlll to do.
